Some players love playing against certain teams. There is no logical reason for this, but it is how it is. The players get the best out of them when they play against certain teams, and in the following article, we will look at some of the English players with the most centuries against a particular team in Test cricket.

1. Jack Hobbs

The first player to register his name on our list is Jack Hobbs, a former right-handed batter for England from Cambridge. Jack played his maiden Test match in 1908 against Australia at Melbourne and, until 1930, featured in a total of 61 Tests. In 102 innings, he scored 5410 runs at an average of 56.94. He scored 15 centuries during his Test career, of which 12 came against Australia.

2. Joe Root

Joe Root, a former England captain and one of the world's best Test batters at the moment, is the next player on our list. Root began his Test career in 2012 against India. Until 2022, he has played 25 Test matches against India and has scored 2526 runs at an average of 63.15 with nine hundreds to his name, the most for him against any team.

3. Wally Hammond

Wally Hammond, a former right-handed batter and a right-arm medium fast bowler from Dover, Kent, is the next to feature on our list. From 1928 to 1947, Wally played 33 Test matches against Australia and scored 2852 runs in 58 innings at an average of 51.85. He scored nine centuries against them, with the highest score of 251.

4. David Gower

Next, we have David Gower, a former left-handed top-order batter from Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Gower made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1978 at Birmingham and continued to play until 1992. He played 42 Test matches against Australia during his career and scored 3269 runs in 77 innings at an average of 44.78. He scored nine hundred against them, with the highest score of 215.

5. Herbert Sutcliffe

Next on the list is Herbert Sutcliffe, a former right-handed batter for England from Harrogate, Yorkshire. In 1924, he made his Test debut against South Africa, and until 1935, he played in 54 Test matches, scoring 4555 runs. He played 27 Tests against Australia during his career and scored 2741 runs in 46 innings at an average of 66.85. He had eight centuries against Australia, with the highest score of 194.

6. Maurice Leyland

At number six, we have Maurice Leyland, a former left-handed batter from New Park, Yorkshire. Maurice made his Test match debut in 1928 and, until 1938, played in a total of 41 Tests, scoring 2764 runs at an average of 46.06. He played 20 Test matches against Australia, scoring 1705 runs at an average of 56.83 and scoring seven centuries.

7. Denis Compton

Denis Compton was a right-handed batter from Hendon, Middlesex. Denis began his Test career in 1937 against New Zealand at The Oval and, until 1957, played in 78 matches, scoring 5807 runs. He played 24 Test matches against South Africa and scored 2205 runs at an average of 53.78 with seven centuries to his name, the most for him against any team.

8. Alastair Cook

Next, we have the former England captain and one of their most successful Test batters, Alastair Cook, on our list. From 2006 to 2018, Cook played 30 Test matches against India and scored 2431 runs at an average of 47.66 with seven centuries to his name, the most for him against any team.

9. John Edrich

John Edrich was a left-handed opening batter from Blofield, Norfolk. John played his first Test against the West Indies in 1963 at Manchester and played in 77 matches until 1976, scoring 5138 runs. He appeared in 32 Test matches against Australia, scoring 2644 runs at an average of 48.96 and scoring seven centuries.

10. Geoff Boycott

Geoff Boycott was a right-handed batter from Fitzwilliam, Yorkshire, who made his Test debut in 1964 against Australia at Nottingham. Until 1982, he played in 108 Tests and scored 8114 runs. He played 38 Tests against Australia and scored 2945 runs at an average of 47.50 with seven centuries to his name, the most for him against any team.
