The English cricket team is one of the most celebrated cricket teams in the world and has produced some great players over the years. Many great batters have played for England in the longest format of the game, and today we will look at some of the batters to score a duck in their very first Test innings.

1. Graham Gooch

Graham Gooch was a right-handed top-order batter for England from Essex who made his Test debut in 1975 against Australia at Birmingham. Graham got out on a duck in his first Test innings. Until 1995, he played in 118 matches, scored 8900 runs at an average of 42.58, and got dismissed on a duck 13 times in 215 innings.

2. Mike Atherton

Mike Atherton was a right-handed opening batter from Manchester, Lancashire. Atherton is one of England’s most successful opening batters and made his Test debut in 1989 against Australia at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. He got dismissed for a duck in his first Test innings, and until 2001, in 115 matches, he got dismissed for a duck 20 times.

3. Alan Knott

Alan Knott was a right-handed wicketkeeper batter from Kent who was among the best wicketkeepers of his time. Alan played his first Test match in 1967 against Pakistan at Nottingham and was dismissed for a duck in his first innings. Until 1981, he played in 95 matches and scored 4389 runs while being dismissed for a duck eight times during his career.

4. Ken Barrington

Ken Barrington was a right-handed middle-order batter from Berkshire who played for England in Test cricket from 1955 to 1968. Ken played his first Test match against South Africa at Nottingham and got out on a duck in his very first innings. He played 82 matches and scored 6806 runs at an average of 58.67 with five ducks to his name.

5. Leonard Hutton

Leonard Hutton was a right-handed batter for England during the 1940s who hailed from Yorkshire. Hutton was one of England’s most prolific batters during that time. He made his Test debut in 1937 against New Zealand at Lord’s and got dismissed without scoring a run in his very first Test innings. Until 1955, he played in 79 matches and scored 6971 runs at an average of 56.67.

6. Keith Fletcher

Keith Fletcher, a right-handed top-order batter for England from Worcester, is next to appear on our list. Keith first played a Test match for England in 1968 against Australia at Leeds. He got out without scoring in his very first inning. In total, he played 59 Test matches for England and scored 3272 runs at an average of 39.90.

7. Mike Smith

Mike Smith was a right-handed top-order batter from Leicester. With close to 40,000 first-class runs, he was one of England’s best batters in county cricket. In 1958, he made his debut in Test cricket against New Zealand at Birmingham and got dismissed on a duck in his very first innings. Until 1972, he played in 50 matches and scored 2278 runs with 11 ducks to his name.

8. Leslie Ames

Leslie Ames was a former right-handed wicketkeeper batter for England from Kent. Ames made his Test-match debut in 1929 against South Africa at The Oval. He got out on a duck in his very first inning and was dismissed without scoring a run five times during his career. In 47 Test matches, he scored 2434 runs at an average of 40.56.

9. Maurice Leyland

Maurice Leyland was a left-handed batter from Harrogate, Yorkshire, who had more than 33,000 first-class runs to his name. In 1928, he made his Test match debut against the West Indies at The Oval and was dismissed without scoring in his very first Test innings. Until 1938, he featured in 41 Test matches for England and scored 2764 runs at an average of 46.06.

10. Robert Wyatt

Robert Wyatt was a right-handed batter for England, hailing from Surrey. Wyatt first played for England in Test cricket in 1927 against South Africa at Old Wanderers, Johannesburg. He was dismissed on a duck in his very first Test inning and got out on a duck six times during his Test career. Until 1937, he played in 40 matches and scored 1839 runs.
