Batting in a Test match is one of the most difficult tasks in cricket, and one needs immense patience and concentration to be successful in it. A batter may face many ups and downs while batting, which makes batting very unpredictable. A batter who scores a hundred in one inning of a match may be out on a duck in the second. Likewise, here we shall name some of the England batters to score a duck and a hundred in the same Test match.

1. Len Braund

Leonard Charles Braund was a right-handed batter from Clewer, Berkshire. Braund made his Test debut in 1901 against Australia at Sydney. In 1903, in a match against Australia at Sydney, Braund became the first English batter to score a hundred and duck in the same match. He scored 102 runs in his first innings and was then out without scoring a run in the second innings.

2. John Tyldesley

John Tyldesley was a right-handed batter from Worsley, Lancashire. John played for England in Test cricket from 1899 to 1909. In 31 matches, he scored 1661 runs at an average of 30.75. He scored a century and a duck in the same Test match in 1905 against Australia at Leeds.

3. George Gunn

Next on the list is George Gunn, a right-handed batter from Nottinghamshire who first played for England in Test cricket in 1907. Gunn played for England in Tests until 1930 and got to feature in 15 matches, scoring 1120 runs at an average of 40. In 1908, in a match against Australia at Sydney, he scored an unbeaten 122 in his first innings, followed by a duck in his second innings.

4. Frank Woolley

Frank Woolley was a left-handed batter from Kent and also a left-arm medium bowler for England. Frank started his Test career in 1909 when he played his first Test match against Australia at The Oval. In 1924, in a match against Australia at Sydney, he scored a duck in his first innings and then scored 123 runs in his second innings.

5. Geoffrey Legge

Next, we have Geoffrey Legge, who was a right-handed batter for England from Kent during the late 1920s. Legge made his Test debut in 1927 against South Africa at Johannesburg and played in a total of five Test matches until 1930. In 1924, in a match against New Zealand, he scored 196 runs in his first innings, which was then followed by a duck in his second innings.

6. Denis Compton

Denis Compton was a right-handed batter and also a left-arm wrist spinner from Hendon, Middlesex. Denis was part of the English Test team from 1937 to 1957. In 78 matches, he scored 5807 runs at an average of 50.06 with 17 centuries to his name. He scored an unbeaten 145 runs and then a duck in the same Test match against Australia at Manchester in 1948.

7. Leonard Hutton

Leonard Hutton was a right-handed batter from Pudsey, Yorkshire, and one of England’s leading batters in the 1940s and 50s. From 1937 to 1955, he was in the English Test team for 79 matches, wherein he scored 6971 runs at an amazing average of 56.67. In 1949, in a Test match against New Zealand at Leeds, he scored a century in his first innings, followed by a duck in the second.

8. Peter May

Next, we have Peter May, a right-handed top-order batter from Berkshire who played for England in Test cricket from 1951 to 1961. May played his first Test against South Africa at Leeds. In 1955, he had a duck in the first inning and then a 112-run second inning. He scored 4537 runs at an average of 46.77 with 13 centuries to his name.

9. Colin Cowdrey

Colin Cowdrey was an Indian-born right-handed top-order batter for England from 1954 to 1975. Colin played his first Test against Australia at Brisbane. In a total of 114 matches, he scored 7624 runs at an average of 44.06. He scored 119 runs in his first innings and then a duck in the second innings in a match against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1960.

10. David Sheppard

David Sheppard was a right-handed batter from Surrey. David was in the Test team from 1950 to 1963 and featured in 22 matches, scoring 1172 runs at an average of 37.80. He scored a century and a duck in the same Test match in 1962 against Australia at Melbourne.
