A test match is the biggest challenge a cricketer ever faces in his cricket career. Many cricketers had a good limited-overs record but failed in test cricket. Staying at the crease is vital for a batter in the limited-overs format, but the pressure is more when it comes to Test cricket. For the Indian test team, there are only two batters who have hit a triple century, with one of them hitting it twice. The first triple century for India in test cricket came after a long time in 2004. We will look at the top ten highest individual scores by the Indian batters in test cricket below. One cricketer appears on the list four times.

1. Virender Sehwag (319)

Virender Sehwag is the first Indian batter to hit a triple century in test cricket. The Nawab of Najafgarh hit his second triple century against South Africa that became his highest test score. Sehwag struck 319 runs off 304 balls with the help of 42 fours and five sixes. MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk hosted this test match in 2008.

2. Virender Sehwag (309)

Sehwag became the first triple centurion for India in test matches when he scored 309 runs off 375 balls in an innings composed of 39 fours and six sixes against Pakistan in Multan in 2004. It helped India beat Pakistan by an innings and 52 runs on their arch-rival’s home.

3. Karun Nair (303*)

Karun Nair scripted his name into the history books by becoming the second Indian cricketer to score a triple century in tests after Virender Sehwag. His innings of an unbeaten 303 came against England in 2016 in Chepauk, which came off 381 deliveries and included 32 fours and four sixes. But his test career did not last long after that innings.

4. Virender Sehwag (293)

Sehwag came close to hitting another triple century in test cricket but fell short of it by seven runs. He scored 293 runs off 254 deliveries against Sri Lanka in Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in 2009. Viru’s innings comprised 40 fours and seven hits out of the park.

5. VVS Laxman (281)

VVS Laxman played a very special inning against Australia at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2001. It was the test match where Laxman and Dravid scripted a historic comeback against the mighty Aussies by stitching together a long partnership to help India win the test match. VVS scored 281 runs off 452 balls, including 44 fours, and batted for 631 minutes at the crease to help India avoid the follow-on.

6. Rahul Dravid (270)

Rahul Dravid’s best test match performance came against Pakistan in Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in 2004, in which he scored 270 runs off 495 balls with the help of 34 fours and one six. The Wall batted for 740 minutes at the crease during this innings.

7. Virat Kohli (254*)

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli made his first 250-plus score against South Africa at MCA Stadium in Pune in 2019. Captain Kohli scored an unbeaten 254 runs off 336 deliveries with the help of 33 fours and two hits outside the fence.

8. Virender Sehwag (254)

It is Sehwag’s fourth entry on the list. Viru scored 254 runs in 247 balls with the help of 47 fours and one six against Pakistan in 2006. The destructive opener was at his best during this innings as he and Dravid stitched a partnership of 410 runs in the first innings while opening the batting. Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore hosted this test match.

9.  Sachin Tendulkar (248*)

The God of cricket Sachin Tendulkar’s best test match performance came against Bangladesh in Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka in 2004. Sachin scored an unbeaten 248 off 379 deliveries with the help of 35 boundaries. He did not hit any score of 250-plus in his Test match career.

10. Virat Kohli (243)

The former RCB and Indian captain’s second-highest score in test cricket came against Sri Lanka in Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi in 2017. Kohli made 243 runs off 287 deliveries, including 25 boundaries, and batted 447 minutes at the crease
