When the T20 World Cup got launched in 2007, there was a sense of excitement among the audience. India and Pakistan, who got ousted from the 50-over edition of the World Cup the same year, played the T20 World Cup final in which India emerged victorious by five runs. West Indies played their first-ever T20 World Cup match against South Africa. Despite Chris Gayle’s heroics of 117 runs in the first innings, they lost and got eliminated after losing another one. But the Caribbean side is the only country to win the T20 World Cup twice- first in 2012 and then in 2016, both under Darren Sammy’s captaincy. Below we look at the top ten West Indies cricketers with the highest runs in the T20 World Cup history.

1. Chris Gayle

The Universe Boss has hit the highest runs for West Indies in the T20 World Cup history. Gayle played his first T20 World Cup match in its inaugural edition in 2007. He has been a part of 33 T20 internationals and scored 965 runs at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 142. Gayle has seven half-centuries and two centuries to his name in the T20 World Cup with the best score of 117.

2. Marlon Samuels

Marlon Samuels occupies the second spot on this list. Samuels scored 530 runs in 20 T20 internationals at an average of 31 and a strike rate of 115. He hit four half-centuries, and his highest score is an unbeaten 85 that came in the 2016 T20 World Cup final against England. The batting all-rounder won the player-of-the-match award in the two T20 World Cup finals for West Indies in 2012 and 2016, which they won.

3. Dwayne Bravo

The champion all-rounder retired from international cricket in 2021. Bravo played his first T20 World Cup match in the 2007 edition and scored 530 runs in 34 T20 internationals at an average of 21 and a strike rate of 126. He hit two half-centuries in the process, and his highest score is an unbeaten 66.

4. Lendl Simmons

The right-handed opening batter first appeared for West Indies in T20 World Cup in the 2009 edition. He has gone on to play 14 T20 matches, scoring 339 runs at an average of 26 and a strike rate of 118. Simmons hit two half-centuries in T20 World Cups, and his best score is an unbeaten 82.

5. Kieron Pollard

Kieron Pollard takes the fifth spot here. The batting all-rounder played his first T20 World Cup match in the 2009 edition. He has appeared in 23 T20 internationals and scored 254 runs at an average of 14 and a strike rate of 117. Pollard has not scored above 50 in the T20 World Cups, and his highest score has been 44.

6. Johnson Charles

Johnson Charles has appeared in 13 T20 internationals in the T20 World Cup for the West Indies. He played his first T20 World Cup match in the 2012 edition and scored 247 runs at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 110. Charles has two fifties to his name in the T20 World Cups, and his best performance is 84 runs.

7. Andre Fletcher

The occasional wicket-keeper batter made his T20 World Cup debut in the 2009 edition and appeared in 11 T20 matches. Fletcher scored 219 runs at an average of 27 and a strike rate of 114 with the help of two half-centuries. His best performance in the T20 World Cups is an unbeaten 84.

8. Darren Sammy

Darren Sammy was the skipper of the West Indies team that won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. The all-rounder played his first T20 World Cup match in the 2009 T20 World Cup and appeared in 25 T20 internationals. Sammy scored 215 runs at an average of 17 and a staggering strike rate of 164, with the highest score of an unbeaten 42.

9. Shivnarine Chanderpaul

The legendary left-hander batter made his T20 World Cup debut in the 2007 edition of the T20 World Cup. Shiv went on to play 13 T20 World Cup matches and scored 186 runs at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 110 with the highest score of 37. He played his last T20 World Cup match in the 2010 edition.

10. Ramnaresh Sarwan

Sarwan was a part of 13 T20 World Cup matches for the West Indies. The right-handed batter made his T20 international debut in the 2007 T20 World Cup and scored 163 runs at an average of 20 and a strike rate below 100 with the highest score of an unbeaten 28. He did not play any T20 World Cup match after the 2010 edition.
