IPL has always been a very cutthroat competition for every franchise. Due to this high level of competition, every decision made by a franchise had been skeptically watched and the impact of every decision’s impact has been calculated. There have been many decisions that have negatively impacted a team’s chances for qualification in the tournament. These decisions have many times hampered an entire team’s balance. Even during the auctions, these wrong decisions have been made which have made negative effects on the franchise.

1. Substituting Morne Morkel In The Qualifier

It was the year 2012, which was no less than a miracle year for the Delhi Daredevils, now known as the Delhi Capitals. In this year’s IPL, they qualified first in the race for the playoffs. The Delhi Daredevils were defeated by the Kolkata Knight Riders in their first qualifier due to poor batting. To replace their poor batting, they brought Andre Russell into their squad and removed purple cap holder Morne Morkel. This was a failed move, as Chennai against them in the 2nd Qualifier went all the way up to scoring a 200+ score and defeated the Delhi Daredevils.

2. Virat Kohli Against Albie Morkel

In the year 2012, against the Chennai Super Kings, the Royal Challengers Bangalore were in a comfortable position, defending the score of 205, until the 19th over went to Virat Kohli, who was up against Albie Morkel. Chennai had very little scope of winning the match until Albie Morkel fiercely took on the medium spin bowling of Virat Kohli and made staggering 28 runs in his 6 balls, which moved the entire game against Royal Challengers Bangalore and cost them the match.

3. Releasing Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal is known for his contributions to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, which would not have been possible if the Mumbai Indians had not released Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal was brought in by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014. After he was brought to Bangalore, his performance and gameplay increased dramatically. He made his way to the Indian team and also achieved a good amount of success, winning many matches for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

4. Giving Captaincy To Ravindra Jadeja

In the previous season of 2022, the Chennai Super Kings temporarily gave the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja in place of their regular captain, MS Dhoni. This move proved to be a disaster for the Chennai Super Kings as they started losing matches, the team combination that Chennai is famous for was lost, and the team was unbalanced. It was late until they realised their mistake in the later part of the tournament when they made MS Dhoni the captain again of the franchise.

5. Losing David Warner

David Warner, for not less than 7 years, was the face and the main player for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was due to his lack of form in 2021 that first the Sunrisers management benched Warner for the season from games, and then he was officially released from the team. Since 2022, he has been playing for the Delhi Capitals. Due to the absence of Warner, Sunrisers Hyderabad have performed very poorly in their recent outings as the entire batting order is seemingly unstable and their performance has drastically decreased.

6. Releasing Rashid Khan

Like David Warner, Sunrisers Hyderabad released Rashid Khan, who was their most prominent spinner and their best bowler. With the release of Rashid Khan, there is almost no effective spin department for the Sunrisers that can perform for them. The void left by Rashid Khan is almost unfillable as he is currently the best T20 bowler in the world, and apart from that, Rashid Khan has the best economy in the IPL, which keeps every batter in the IPL in check.

7. Consolidating Entire Bowling On Deepak Chahar

The Chennai Super Kings ran after Deepak Chahar in 2022 as their main bowler for the season. This made them dependable on him for their entire bowling department as there was no other experienced fast-opening bowler except for Bravo, who led in the death. As no power play bowler was available for Chennai, they performed very poorly in the power play overs as they were not able to take quick wickets and their young bowlers leaked a lot of runs.

8. Releasing AB de Villiers

AB De Villiers is undoubtedly the foreign player with the most impact in the IPL. The wonders he did for RCB are beyond imaginable. He is referred to as one of the best batsmen of all time due to his vast abilities for managing the entire inning and winning games single-handedly. The Delhi Capitals left A. B. in 2011, from where he was picked up as the wicketkeeper-batsman for Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the first season itself, he helped Bangalore reach the finals of the IPL. This short-term decision of the Delhi management made a drastic impact, as they finished bottom on the points table in that season as lost their batting strength.

9. Retaining Uncapped Players Instead Of Experienced Ones

As Sunrisers Hyderabad was going through terrible seasons, the management decided to let go of the core of the team with the likes of Rashid Khan and David Warner. They retained Umraan Malika among the other youngsters to improve their bowling with his speed. But on the contrary, this led to even further chaos as all bowlers were demolished by batters due to their unguided line and lengths and inexperience.

10. Releasing Chris Gayle

Beginning his career in the first season of the IPL in 2008. Chris Gayle played for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was released by KKR in the year 2011. Gayle joined RCB in the year 2011 and in the very first season in which he played for RCB, he showed everyone the mistake which KKR had made by releasing him. He won the orange cap in the 2011 season for the RCB and made the team find their way into the finals of that season.
