The story of Test Matches began in 1877 when Australia and England, the two national teams, started it. Australia won the match and created history. From then onwards, the format has evolved its form on various occasions. Till now, over 2000 test matches have been played all around the world. Only the permanent countries recognized by ICC play Test Cricket. At present, twelve recognized countries play Test Cricket. Test Cricket is the introductory form of cricket with the most prolonged play duration. The game is a series of 5-day matches in which the team with more runs after the completion of the other team's two-inning game wins the series.

1. GC Smith

Graeme Craig Smith is a former South African captain. He is the first and only captain to captain 100+ test matches. Smith played 109 games as a test captain and won 53 and lost 29 with a win percentage of 48.62. He was the captain from 2003 to 2014 with three test maces.

2. AR Border

Allan Robert Border is a former Australian test captain and the second most player to play most matches as test captain with 93 games in which he won 32 and lost 22 with a win percentage of 34.4. He was the captain from 1984 to 1994.

3. SP Fleming

Stephen Paul Fleming is a former New Zealand test captain from 1997 to 2006, and the most matches played as a captain from New Zealand. He played 80 tests as a captain and won 28 and lost 27 with a win percentage of 33.75.

4. RT Ponting

Ricky Thomas Ponting is a former Australian test captain and the second most successful captain in cricket history. He made his test captaincy debut in 2004 and played 77 games as a captain and won 48 and lost 16 with a win percentage of 62.33. He has had six test maces throughout his career.

5. CH Lloyd

Clive Hubert Lloyd is a former West Indies Test Captain. He captained the West Indies Test Cricket Team from 1974 to 1985. He played 74 games as a captain and won 36 and lost 12 with a win percentage of 48.64.

6. V Kohli

Virat Kohli is the current Indian test captain and the most successful Indian and Asian Captain in SENA countries and has won everywhere. Known for his aggressive attitude, he played 66 tests as a captain and won 39 and lost 16 with a win percentage of 59.09. Virat made his captaincy debut in 2014 and led India in the World Test Championship 2019-2021 finals. He holds the record for three test mace.

7. MS Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a former Indian Test Captain and is considered one of the greatest captains in cricket history. He was made captain in the test from 2008 to 2014. He played 60 games as a captain and won 27 and lost 18 with a win percentage of 45. He has two test maces.

8. Alastair Nathan Cook 

Alastair Nathan Cook is a former English test captain from 2010 to 2016. He was the only captain in the last many years to defeat India in a home test series in 2012-13. Cook won the 2015 Ashes series. He played 59 tests and won 24 and lost 22 with a win percentage of 40.67. Cook has one test mace.

9. JE Root

Joseph Edward Root is a current test captain of England who made his captaincy debut in 2017. He played 58 games as a captain and won 27 and lost 22 with a win percentage of 46.55. He led England in the world test championship 2019-2021, in the Ashes in 2017, 2019, and 2021.

10. SR Waugh

Stephen Rodger Waugh is a former Australian test captain who made his last captaincy debut from 1999 to 2004. He played 57 games as a captain and won 41 and lost nine with a win percentage of 71.92. He led the Australian test team to win the Ashes in 2001 and 2002-03. Waugh holds the record for the first test mace in 2003.
