The beginning of ODI cricket can be traced back to 1971 when Australia and England played it for the first time at the Melbourne Cricket ground. Since then, over 4000 ODIs have been played. There are 16 members of ICC who are entitled to ODI status. One Day International Cricket is a 50 overs game, and the two rival teams bat till they lose their wickets. The role of captains in ODI is of significance. They lead the team through difficult situations and ensure the team's victory.

1. RT Ponting

Ricky Thomas Ponting is a former Australian captain. Nicknamed the Punter, he is one of the greatest captains in cricket history. He was first made the captain of the Australian ODI team in the year 2002 till 2012, in which he played 230 games as a captain and won 165 and lost 51 ODI with a win percentage of 76.14. Under his captaincy, Australia managed to win the 2003 and 2007 ODI world cup trophies.

2. SP Fleming 

Stephen Paul Fleming is a former New Zealand captain. He is one of the three captains to play 200 ODI games as a captain with 218 matches in which he won 98 and lost 106 with a win percentage of 48.04. He was the captain from the year 1997 to 2007.

3. MS Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a former Indian captain and is the only captain in cricket history to win the 50-over world cup, 20-over world cup, and a champion trophy. He became the captain in 2007 and played 200 games as a captain and won 110 and lost 74 with a win percentage of 59.52. India was able to win the 2011 world cup and 2013 champion’s trophy under his captaincy.

4. A Ranatunga

Arjuna Ranatunga is a former Sri Lankan captain who was the captain of the Sri Lanka ODI cricket team from the year 1988 to 1999. The Srilanka Cricket Team flourished under his captaincy, and they also won the 1999 ODI cricket World Cup. He played 193 games as a captain and won 89 and lost 95 with a win percentage of 48.37.

5. AR Border 

Allan Robert Border is a former Australian captain and the first Australian captain to win the ODI Cricket world cup in 1987 and established the Australian cricket team in ODI cricket. He played 178 games as a captain and won 107 and lost 67 with a win percentage of 61.42. Allan was the captain of the Australian ODI cricket team for nine years. (between 1985 to 1994).

6. M Azharuddin

Mohammad Azharuddin is a former Indian captain who played his first ODI as the team's captain in 1990. He continued with the captaincy till 1999. He played 174 games as a captain and won 90 and lost 51 with a win percentage of 54.16. He led India in 1992,1996 and, 1999 ODI World Cups.

7. GC Smith

Graeme Craig Smith is a former South African captain who made his ODI captaincy debut in 2003 and his last game in 2011. He played 150 ODI matches as a captain and won 92 and lost 51 with a win percentage of 64.23.

8. SC Ganguly

Saurav Chandidas Ganguly is a former Indian captain and has made the Indian cricket team fearless. It was under him that the Indian team won the famous Natwest series. He became the captain in 1999 and had the captaincy till 2005. Ganguly led India in the finals of the 2003 ODI cricket World Cup. He played 147 games as a captain and won 76 and lost 66 with a win percentage of 53.52.

9. IK Niazi

Imran Khan Niazi is a former Pakistani captain who was the captain of the ODI team from 1982 to 1992, in which he won the 1992 ODI cricket World Cup. He played 139 games as a captain and won 75 and lost 59 with a win percentage of 55.92.

10. WJ Cronje 

Wessel Johannes Cronje is a former South African captain who made his ODI captaincy debut from 1994 to 2000. He played 138 games as a captain and won 99 and lost 35 with a win percentage of 73.70.
