Throughout cricketing history, there have been various batsmen, who have had terrific starts to their ODI careers. This has resulted in some big individual scores in ODI debuts. We will now have a look at the highest individual scores in ODI debut. 

10. Rob Nicol (2011)

This game was the first one, of a three-match series on the New Zealand tour of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe batted first, and scored 231. New Zealand had a strong opening partnership, worth 153 runs, from the openers, Martin Guptill, and the debutant Rob Nicol. Nicol scored a century, and he was hence awarded, the man of the match, after New Zealand won by nine wickets. Rob Nicol scored 108 not out in this match.

9. Abid Ali (2019)

This game was the fourth match of a five-match series between Pakistan and Australia. Pakistan had already lost the series, as they had lost all the previous three matches. In this game, they bowled first, and conceded 277. Pakistan was 74-2, after which Abid Ali and Mohammad Rizwan, had a 144-run partnership. Both of them eventually scored centuries. However, Pakistan could not chase this total, losing the match by six runs. Abid Ali scored 112 runs in this match.

8. Phillip Hughes (2013)

Phillip Hughes was an Australian opening batsman. He debuted in a home series against Sri Lanka. In his debut match, he made a century, and guided Australia to 305. In reply, Sri Lanka got skittled out for 198. Phillip Hughes scored 112 runs in this match.

7. Temba Bavuma (2016)

This game was the only ODI in the Ireland tour of South Africa. Temba Bavuma made his debut. It turned out to be a high-scoring inning for South Africa, with them scoring 354, due to Bavuma’s century. He was the second South African to score a century on his ODI debut. South Africa won the game by a massive margin of 206 runs. Temba Bavuma scored 113 runs in this match.

6. Andy Flower (1992)

This game was a World Cup game. Zimbabwe batted first against Sri Lanka. The Zimbabwean opener Andy Flower made a century, which led the team to a massive total of 312. However, the Sri Lankan team chased the total in the final over. Andy Flower scored 115 not out in this match.

5. Martin Guptill (2009)

This game was the fourth match of a five-match series between New Zealand and the West Indies. The series was at level, with 1-1. New Zealand batted first. They were at 74-2, after which Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor, had a 144-run partnership. New Zealand ended up with 275. However, the game got abandoned after West Indies batted just a bit more than ten overs. Martin Guptill scored 122 not out in this match.

4. Colin Ingram (2010)

South Africa hosted Zimbabwe in this ODI. South Africa batted first, and scored 351, thanks to centuries by the opener Hashim Amla, and the debutant Colin Ingram. In response, Zimbabwe fought back, as much as possible, but lost by 64 runs. Colin Ingram scored 124 runs in this match.

3. Mark Chapman (2015)

Mark Chapman might be playing for New Zealand at present. However, at the start of his career, he was a Hong Kong player. He made his ODI debut for Hong Kong. It was a game against the UAE, in the ICC World Cricket League Championship. Hong Kong batted first, and scored 298, thanks to a brilliant century by Chapman. They restricted UAE to 209, and won the match comfortably. Mark Chapman scored 124 not out in this match.

2. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (2021)

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is a keeper-batsman from Afghanistan, and he made his debut against Ireland in a three-match series. In this game, Afghanistan batted first, and they scored 287 due to his century, and a half-century from Rashid Khan. Those runs proved helpful at the end, when they edged out a close victory of just 16 runs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 127 runs in this match.

1. Desmond Haynes (1978)

Desmond Haynes was one of the best openers in the world during his playing days. He exhibited a bit of his class, right in his debut ODI game. He scored over 140 in this game, still standing strong as the record for the highest individual ODI score. This game had West Indies, batting first against Australia, scoring 313, and winning the game comfortably. Desmond Haynes scored 148 runs in this match.
