The IPL is the most amazing cricket series in the world. Nearly every cricket player hopes to sign a deal with an IPL team someday. Many picks from the past 14 auctions are still talked about by fans; some of those expensive purchases paid off, but most of the players who cost a lot of money have disappointed. Over the years, people have made many shocking decisions in the IPL auctions. Let us look at the most shocking IPL bids.

1. Tymal Mills (IPL 2017)

At the IPL 2017 auction, RCB paid a staggering 12 crore for England bowler Tymal Mills. After giving up red-ball cricket, Mills had established himself as an expert in white-ball matches. But before the auction, Mills had played for England in just 4 T20Is and claimed three wickets. For RCB, he had a dismal season, taking five wickets in 5 games while giving up 8.58 runs per over. Since then, he was never acquired by an IPL squad.

2. Jaydev Unadkat (IPL 2018)

At the 2018 IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals broke the bank to get Jaydev Unadkat after being pleased with his 2017 season performances. They shelled out 11.5 crores for the left-arm seamer. Fans believed the Royals went over and beyond for Unadkat despite his remarkable performances in 2017, Unadkat ultimately fell short of expectations, managing just 11 wickets in 15 games. RR holed out significant money, 8.4 crores, for Unadkat at the following auction, further shocking the fans; he claimed ten wickets in 2019. In 2020, RR purchased the seamer once more, this time for three crores.

3. Chris Morris (IPL 2021)

With their purchase of Chris Morris for a record 16.25 crore, Rajasthan extended their tradition of lavishly spending throughout the auction, making the South African the most expensive player purchased during an IPL auction. Morris had hardly ever been well enough to plan a complete IPL season, and he hadn't played for South Africa since mid-2019, so it surprised fans. Morris did okay, taking 15 wickets with the ball and giving RR a victory over Delhi with his quick-fire 36* off 18 balls.

4. Pawan Negi (IPL 2016)

At the 2016 auction, Delhi (the Daredevils at the time) burned a hole in their budget of 8.5 crores for local lad Pawan Negi. Something in Negi was the cause. Negi had taken seven wickets during the previous four IPL seasons, something Delhi noticed that others hadn't. In 2016, the left-arm spinner struggled under the weight of the price tag, taking just one wicket in eight games.

5. Varun Chakravarthy (IPL 2019)

Varun Chakravarthy was a little-known cricketer before his success with KKR in the last several IPL seasons, but he is now well-known, thanks to that. Punjab startled the fans in 2019 when they bid significantly for the unidentified spinner, spending a staggering 8.4 crore for the Tamil Nadu spinner. Chakravarthy had only participated in a first-class game, and a couple of List-A games up to that point. He did not have a particularly memorable experience with Punjab in 2019; he only got to play one game and achieved several 1/35.

6. Suresh Raina (IPL 2022)

Suresh Raina has been a part of CSK since the beginning of IPL. He was a crucial member of the team and was a terrific player. With the likes of his aggressive batting, CSK has won many matches. He also played a significant role in helping CSK win many IPL titles. Raina is also one of the best fielders that CSK has had. He is a match-winner. He is called Mr. IPL by cricket lovers across the globe. CSK made a shocking decision not to retain Suresh Raina. However, the most surprising part was when CSK did not even bid for Raina in the auctions. No other teams bid for Raina as well. It was the most shocking auction result in history. Fans of all the IPL teams criticized this decision.

7. Sam Curran (IPL 2023)

Sam Curran, an all-rounder for England, received a stunning Rs 18.5 crore bid from Punjab Kings, making him the most expensive player in IPL auction history. After a competitive three-way bidding war involving the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Punjab, Curran returned to Punjab for an astounding sum. Curran, who will represent Punjab in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, was Punjab's representative in the previous year.

8. David Warner (IPL 2022)

In the IPL 2021, David Warner's batting performance for SRH was inconsistent. He had been routinely providing great starts at the top of the order for the club for several years, but he could not do so now. Due to shoddy politics, SRH removed him from the captaincy and has now removed him from the playing 11. The primary justification for disclosing him is due to this. The 35-year-old Warner was relieved of his captaincy midway through the 2021 IPL season after helping the Hyderabad-based team win their first championship in 2016.

9. Yuvraj Singh (IPL 2015)

Yuvraj Singh played for RCB in 2014 after being acquired for a record sum of INR 14.5 crore. Despite having a good season, the team removed him before the 2015 auction. However, Delhi went all-in for Yuvraj this time. They invested INR 16 crore in him, but the veteran did not fulfill the expectations. He only scored 248 runs, averaging under 20, and was released the following year. That is currently the most expensive item ever purchased at an IPL auction.

10. Deepak Hooda (IPL 2016)

An Indian all-rounder is very valuable at the IPL auction. Deepak Hooda's high demand at the 2016 auctions was, therefore, reasonably apparent. He had gained notoriety after scoring a match-winning knock for Rajasthan the season before. From a starting price of INR 10 lakhs, SRH purchased him for INR 4.2 crore. He completed 144 runs at a 10.28 average. In the following three seasons with SRH, he could not score even 100 runs in a season.
