In 2009 ICC came up with a new rule to decide the outcome of tied matches. It was agreed that each team would face one over, and whichever team scored higher would be the winner. Each team was also allotted only two wickets to bat within the over. Usually, the best players undertake the task of handling the super over; therefore, it’s no shock that some memorable performances have come out of the super over.

1. Rohit Sharma Vs New Zealand

During the third T-20 match between India and New Zealand at Hamilton in January, went down to the wire. After a great inning by Kiwi captain Kane, the game ended in a tie. A super-over was a must to decide the winner. New Zealand went first and scored 17 runs in the over. It was all up to skipper Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With ten runs required off the two balls, Rohit Sharma stepped up to hit back-to-back sixes to Tim Southee. He led Team India to victory in extraordinary fashion.

2. Jaspreet Bhumrah Vs GL

During the 2017 IPL, GL and MI went head to head. Gujarat opened the match and gave a target of 154 runs. MI managed to turn the match in their favor until the second last over when Basil Thampy took two wickets, and the match ended in a draw. In the super over MI, scored 11 runs, thanks to the help of Kieran Pollard. Gujarat had a string batting lineup, but the ever-reliable and aggressive Jasprit Bumhrah bowled Yorker after Yorker stopped GL for only six runs.

3. Yusuf Pathan Vs KKR

This first-ever IPL super over paved the way for the future. RR and KKR met each other in the 2009 IPL. The fixture seemed to be a heated one. Rajasthan started the match by scoring 150/6.KKR skipper Saurav Ganguly took the team’s charge, and the match ended in a tie. Chris Gayle went out for KKR, smashing 15 runs. A seemingly impossible task lay ahead, but Yusuf Pathan shattered KKR’s hopes to hit 18 runs off four balls, winning the match for RR.

4. Navdeep Saini Vs MI

During the 2020 IPL, MI and RCB had a match that went the extra mile.  RCB Padikkal, Finch, and De Villiers also scored half a century to surpass 201-3. In response, the MI middle-order duo of Kieran Pollard and Ishan Kishan alone took them to 201 after a shaky start from MI. For a match that was so high, scoring the hero of the super over was a bowler- Navdeep Saini. Saini bowled Yorker after Yorker, stopping MI for only seven runs which RCB easily chased.

5. Chris Gayle Vs New Zealand

The first-ever international super over also brought in a lot of action. Maybe its success was what led to super over being adopted. In a T-20 match between West Indies and New Zealand at Auckland in 2008, the match ended in a tie after both teams scored 158 in twenty overs. West Indies batted first in the super over; the strong monster batsman Chris Gayle smashed Daniel Vetorri for 25 runs. Second highest score in super over. West Indies won the match after bowling out New Zealand for 15 runs.

6. Deandra Dottin Vs South Africa

The only woman to make the list, Deandra Dottin, achieved an extraordinary feat. In January 2022, in a woman’s ODI match, the west indies faced the South African team. While the match was a low scoring one, with the target being only 161, the same can’t be said for the match. West Indies star player Deandra Dottin smashed Shabnim Ismail for 25 runs. Sadly, South Africa was able to keep up and fell nine runs short. Deandra ties the record with Gayle.

7. Logan Van Beek Vs West Indies

The highest score in a super-over was set by the Netherlands. On 26TH June 2023, the west indies and the Netherlands went head to head in an ODI match. The match was a spectacle, with both teams scoring 374 runs to tie the score. What followed was simply extraordinary. Netherlands batsman Logan Van Beek smashed Jason Holder for three fours and three sixes, demolishing the West Indies. He set the record for the highest team and individual score in a super over.

8. Sunil Narine Vs Trinidad Tobago

We have talked a lot about the batsman, but this might be even better than hitting five sixes. During the Caribbean league matchups, Trinidad Tobacco faced Guanya Warrior. After a low-scoring tie between the teams, both scoring only 118, the result was to be declared by a super over. Warrior started the super over, giving a target of 12 runs for the opponent. What seemed like a normal target proved to be a lot; A magical event occurred with warrior’s bowler Sunil Narine bowling a maiden super over, a feat never replicated before or after.

9. Gayle Vs MI

This was a special match with not just one but two super-overs. KXIP and MI both hit hard and tied on a score of 176 runs. Another tie occurred in the first super over due to a great bowling performance by Shami and Bhumrah. In the second power play, the duo of Kieran Pollard and Hardik Pandya managed to set a target of 12 runs. However, no bowler could have stopped Chris Gayle, who hit nine runs in three balls to secure the victory.

10. Rabada Vs KXIP

In the second match of the 2020 IPL hosted in Dubai, KXIP and Delhi faced off against one another. Both teams had strong batting lineups but the bowlers performed exceptionally that night. The match tied for a score of 157. Punjab’s batsmen weren’t ready to face Rabada. He bowled Punjab out for two runs in the super over. Delhi easily scored three runs to win that match. Excellent performance by Rabada swayed the match in Delhi’s favor.
