The subcontinent rivalry is one of the most interesting ones. India and Sri Lanka have played a lot against each other. Both nations have produced some extraordinary players, who, in turn, have contributed to their respective teams. The two nations are champion sides who have won a few ICC titles. India and Sri Lanka keep playing the bilateral series organized by their respective cricket boards. This is India’s highest ODI score against Sri Lanka. The match took place in Rajkot, on the 15th of December 2009. Sri Lanka toured India and played the first ODI against the hosts on a batting-friendly pitch. It was Kumar Sangakkara, who won the toss and asked India to bat first. India grabbed the opportunity to score big. Sehwag scored a brilliant 146 off just 102 balls. India’s skipper, MS Dhoni, came into bat at no.3 and played a brilliant innings of 72 runs. Consistent performances in the middle order helped India to get  a mammoth score of 414. In the end, India won by a bare margin of three runs.

404/5 is India’s second-best score against Sri Lanka in the ODIs. On the 13th of November, 2014, skipper Virat Kohli elected to bat first. It is one of the most memorable matches for the Indian fans, as well as, for Rohit Sharma, who smashed a record-breaking highest individual score in the ODIs. The hitman scored 264 runs off 173 balls, including nine 6s and 33 boundaries. The second-best performer was Virat Kohli, who scored 66 runs and helped India to get to 404.

Again, a mammoth total by India came on the 13th of December 2017. India batted first after the visitors elected to field first. On a good batting wicket, skipper Rohit Sharma needed no second invitation. He opened the innings alongside Shikhar Dhawan, and both stitched a 100-run partnership. Skipper scored 208* off 153 deliveries and became the first captain to score a double-ton in the ODIs. He smashed 12 sixes and thirteen boundaries and took India to 392.

Under the leadership of the Hitman, Rohit Sharma, India scored a big total once again. On the 15th of January 2023, Rohit elected to bat first on a flat track. After giving India a great start, the skipper vanished for 42 runs. It was his partner Shubman Gill, who smashed a fine century (116 off 97). In came Virat Kohli, who dominated the Lankans from the word go. The former skipper scored a gigantic hundred (166 off 110), leaving Sri Lanka in despair. A total team effort helped India to get to 390, and then bowl out their rivals for a bare minimum score of 73.

India toured Sri Lanka in August 2017 and played the fourth ODI in Colombo. After electing to bat first, Rohit Sharma made a great start and converted it into a fine century, scoring 104 off 88 balls. Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, was just too good for Sri Lanka, as he notched up another classy century, scoring 131 off 96 deliveries. The middle-order batter, Manish Pandey, scored a well-composed half-century, while MS Dhoni, scored an unbeaten 49 to help India get to 375.

The match took place on the 26th of May, 1999 in Taunton. Arjuna Ranatunga of Sri Lanka opted to field first on a good batting surface. Opener Sourav Ganguly, smashed his highest ODI total (183 off 158). He was accompanied by his teammate and the no.3 batter, Rahul Dravid, who scored an elegant century (145 off 129). India bundled out the Sri Lankans for 216 runs and won the match by 157 runs. Left-arm spinner, Robin Singh, claimed a fine fifer and helped India win the match quite comfortably.

India went past the 370 run-mark, yet again, against one of their oldest rivals. On the 10th of January 2023, India batted first and scored 373/7. Skipper Rohit Sharma provided a blazing start to the team and scored 83 runs off just 67 balls. Shubman , Gill, too, played a fine knock of 70. It was Virat Kohli again, who smashed another century, which he often does. He went back to the pavilion after scoring 113 off 87 balls. In reply, the Lankans were given a great start from Parthum Nissanka after losing Avishka Fernando early in the innings. Skipper Dasun Shanaka scored a valiant 108* off 88 balls, which in the end, did not prove fruitful for his team as they lost the match by 67 runs.

On the 3rd of February 2000, India played the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo. India elected to bat first, and Virender Sehwag scored a blistering 116 of just 90 balls, including seventeen fours. Yuvraj Singh also played a fine knock of 117 runs off 95 balls and even took a wicket, which earned him the MOTM award. Yusuf Pathan’s 59* off 38 provided the finishing touches to India’s mammoth total of 363.

India once again scored 363 runs in the first ODI on the 2nd of November, 2014. Ajinkya Rahan scored 111, Shikhar Dhawan made 113 runs, followed by Suresh Raina, who played a composed knock of 52. India got to 363 runs at the end of fifty overs and won the match by 169 runs.

The recently concluded World Cup once again, saw a high-scoring encounter between the two teams. This time, India demolished the Sri Lankans with a dominant display in both innings. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli scored 92 and 88 respectively. Shreyas Iyer, too, played a blistering knock of 82 off 56 deliveries. Mohammed Shami claimed a classy fifer to help restrict Sri Lanka to just 55 runs.
