Chasing a huge target is usually a daunting task. The scoreboard pressure ends up getting the better of the chasing team. However, some teams brave the odds and end up chasing mammoth totals. We will now have a look at biggest targets chased successfully in ODIs.

1. South Africa Vs Australia (2006)

This was one of the greatest ODI chases of all time. Australia posted up 430+ and South Africa had to chase the target to not only win the match but also the series. This was a decider with series tied at 2-2. Graeme Smith’s 90 and Herschelle Gibbs’ 175 ensured South Africa got a narrow 1-wicket win in the penultimate ball. Australia set the world record for highest team score during their innings and South Africa immediately broke it in the chase. The target chased in this match was 435.

2. South Africa Vs Australia (2016)

This was the third match of the 5-match series between Australia and South Africa. South Africa had won the first two matches. In this match Australia had batted first and posted a huge total. In reply, during South African innings, every batsman contributed from the opener Quinton de Kock to the No.8 batsman Andile Phehlukwayo. David Miller scored a century. South Africa managed to chase the target and they sealed the series. The target chased in this match was 372.

3. England Vs West Indies (2019)

Chris Gayle managed to score 135 and set up a 360+ target for England to chase. Despite this being a daunting task, it was made into light work by Jason Roy and Joe Root. Roy scored 123(85) and Eoin Morgan, the captain too had an important half-century in the midst to finally bring England the victory. The target chased in this match was 361.

4. India Vs Australia (2013)

This is the same series as the earlier India vs Australia match with the 351 target was discussed. This was the second match of the series with Australia having won the first match. The solid top order of India for years to come: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Together, they managed to pull off one of the best chases in ODI history. There was only wicket that fell which was of Dhawan’s. Kohli managed to score a 52-ball 100. India won the match with six and a half overs to spare. The target chased in this match was 360.

5. Australia Vs India (2019)

This was the fourth match of the 5-match series and Australia were trailing 1-2 behind and hence this was a must-win match for them. They were chasing a huge 350+ total and were 12-2. From there on though, Peter Handscomb and Usman Khawaja consolidated a huge partnership and then Ashton Turner started smashing. Australia won the match and levelled the series. The target chased in this match was 359.

6. England Vs Pakistan (2019)

England faced a daunting target due to Pakistan’s splendid batting in the first innings. However, Bairstow’s rapid batting ensured that there was no hiccup in the chase and England ended up chasing the target comfortably. The target chased in this match was 359.

7. India Vs England (2017)

India was chasing another 350+ target, this time against England. India found themselves reeling under pressure when they were 63-4. From here on, Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav stitched a 200-run partnership and rescued India. The target chased in this match was 351.

8. India Vs Australia (2013)

This series was truly a run fest where no target felt safe. India had previously chased a 350+ target in this series and they had to do that once again in this match to keep their series hopes alive. The entire top order of India: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli fired and India managed to win the match and level the series 2-2. The target chased in this match was 351.

9. England Vs New Zealand (2015)

This match was at some time in the beginning of the time England revolutionized its white ball approach. This was the fourth match of a 5-match series with New Zealand with England trailing 1-2. This being a must-win match, England’s captain Eoin Morgan scored a splendid century to help them chase the target. The target chased in this match was 350.

10. Pakistan Vs Australia (2022)

Pakistan was hosting Australia for a three match ODI series. This match was the second match in the series. Having lost the first match, this was a must-win game for Pakistan. Babar Azam was the captain of the match and having to chase a huge total, he displayed his class and scored a century to enable Pakistan’s victory. The target chased in this match was 349.
